In the study of algorithmic music composition, an important problem is how to combine localized musical vocabularies to construct appealing global structures of the generated pieces. Integer programming, which is a method of solving large discrete optimization problem, may play an important role in achieving that purpose because it may allow us to analyze existing pieces and to plan the structures of the generated pieces from a global point of view. In this presentation, Tsubasa Tanaka, a postdoctoral researcher on the music representations team, will introduce his ongoing studies, which formulate the problem of motif analysis and that of planning the relationships between musical vocabularies and global structures as integer programming problems.
