Factorsynth est un outil expérimental pour Max qui utilise des techniques de factorisation de matrices pour la création sonore et la synthèse croisée. Les sons d'entrée sont décomposés en un ensemble de formes temporelles et spectrales qui peuvent ensuite être modifiées et recombinées librement, ou appliqués sur un autre son.

C'est une sorte de système d'édition spectrale dont les éléments à manipuler sont d'un niveau d'abstraction relativement élevé, par rapport à d'autres systèmes d'analyse/resynthèse basés sur la modification de bins temps-fréquence individuels. Dans Factorsynth, les éléments base des transformations peuvent être, par exemple, des notes entières, des segments d'attaque, des structures inharmoniques, des événements impulsionnels, etc.

Au cours de ce séminaire, je présenterai le cadre général de la factorisation de matrices ainsi que ses applications habituelles dans l'audio (séparation de sources, analyse du contenu musical). Ensuite, j'introduirai leur utilisation dans le domaine de la création musicale, toujours peu explorée. Je finirai par une démonstration de la version actuelle de Factorsynth.

"Factorsynth: a tool for analysis/resynthesis based on matrix factorization"

Factorsynth is an experimental Max tool for sound modification and cross-synthesis based on matrix factorization. The input sounds are decomposed into a set of spectra and a set of temporal functions, which can be then recombined in several ways to obtain the output sound.

It can be understood as a spectral editing tool in which the elements to be manipulated are of a relatively high abstraction level, compared to analysis/resynthesis systems based on manipulating individual time-frequency bins. In Factorsynth, the elements to be manipulated can be, for instance, entire musical notes, attack portions, inharmonic structures, impulsive events...

In this talk, I will briefly present the principles of matrix factorization and its traditional applications to audio (source separation, music information retrieval). I will then introduce its use in the domain of musical creation, which remains largely unexplored, followed by a demo of the current version of Factorsynth.
