Chirvani Tchalaiev was born in 1936. He spent his childhood in Dagestan, and is of the minority Lakski ethnicity. His works received recognition in 1969 following his participation in a composition competition. Tchalaiev was deeply influenced by the folk traditions of his homeland, and developed his compositional style upon this basis. As a pianist and singer, he often performed his own Lieder.
