A methodological approach to sound design will be presented through the development of a sample application
in watchmaking industry, led by Ircam SPD Team, and in association with the composer Sebastien Gaxie.
The objective of this project is to achieve the sound of a set of watches called “minute repetitions”;
it includes three phases:
• the elaboration of a set of sound loads: from a corpus of reference sounds, timbre space, preference cards, and a series of portraits allow to characterize semantic attributes that constitute the target sound.
• the phase of creation, led by composer S. Gaxie based on analysis of data from the first stage .
The work resulted in the implementation of several approaches , especially in terms of sound synthesis (additive synthesis, physical modeling via Modalys, etc.) .
• a validation step which is to examine the various proposals in the light of criteria of sound typing
initially set and leads to a small set of optimal solutions.
