This paper explores the idea of live coding programming environments as notational systems. The improvisational practice of live coding as combining both composition and performance is introduced and selected systems are discussed. The author’s Threnoscope system is then introduced, but this is a system that contains both descriptive and prescriptive scores that can be changed in real-time.
