Christian Mason - Equinoxes of the Infinite
World of transparency and last release
And world within the world. Beyond our speech
To tell what equinoxes of the infinite
The spirit ranges in its rare utmost flight
The title for the piece was taken from the final stanza of a poem by David Gascoyne (1916-2001):
World of transparency and last release
And world within the world. Beyond our speech
To tell what equinoxes of the infinite
The spirit ranges in its rare utmost flight
The piece charts a process of ascent, constructed through the superimposition of different kinds of melodic line over a series of ‘harmonic drones’. The various lines articulate contrary expressive qualities - such as smooth and angular, delicate and violent - in a variety of contexts and relationships.
