Program note

Les poèmes d'Elizabeth Bishop m'ont impressionné autant par leur cohérence verbale limpide que par l'utilisation imaginative de sons syllabiques suggérant la voix d'une chanteuse. J'étais en sympathie avec leur optique, car il y a presque toujours une couche secondaire de signification, parfois ironique, parfois passionnée, qui suggère une atmosphère spéciale, souvent en contradiction avec ce que disent les mots. J'ai moi-même défini l'ordre des poèmes, qui alternent les réflexions sur la nature, l'amour et l'isolement. Le titre, tiré du poème « Insomnie », a été choisi pour plusieurs raisons : d'abord, il me semble caractériser l'univers général des poèmes ; ensuite, je voulais que la musique soit le miroir des mots ; enfin, parce que l'ensemble Speculum Musicae (« miroir de la musique ») m'avait commandé l'œuvre pour fêter le Bicentenaire des Etats-Unis.
